Frequently Asked Questions about Hypnosis
Will I lose control of my mind?
The truth is no one can control your mind unless you
want them to. This can occur both in and out of a trance-like state of
mind.
Will I be forced to bark like a dog/walk like a
chicken etc?
In a trance-like state, you will not do anything that
you would not normally do when you are completely awake.
Isn't it true that hypnosis is evil or using hypnotic techniques in
everyday life is slimy and untrustworthy?
In our Hypnosis Toronto workshops, we teach
techniques which occur naturally in nature. We make students aware of
the natural laws of suggestion and rapport so that they can be more
confident in life and effective in achieving their goals.
Will I be able to wake up in the case of an
emergency?
Remember, you are in control at all times. A hypnotic
trance is very similar to reading a book. When you are reading a book,
your mind is alive with pictures and stories. You naturally settle into
a relaxed state and often let your mind wander. However relaxed and
engrossed in the book you become, you will still hear the telephone ring
(or a fire truck) and if you like, you can answer it.
I've never been hypnotized. What can I expect to happen?
Hypnosis is like a daydream. Most people have them
several times a day without ever realizing it. This is your subconscious
mind running at will. Some people equate this sensation to the little
voices that they hear in their head. You may be surprised to find
yourself slipping into a light trance right now as you read this page.
Is it true that hypnosis can cure everything instantly?
What the mind can conceive, the body can achieve.
Although this is a common belief in this day and age, we are dealing
with both the power of suggestion and a person's subconscious desire to
change (heal). Because of this the counselor and the client work
together to create the most effective suggestions for change. Keeping
this in mind, everyone reacts differently to the hypnotic suggestions.
Will all of my secrets be exposed?
Yes... Just kidding!
In a clinical session you don't have to say anything.
Hypnosis has risen in prominence because of its ability to resolve
subconscious patterns without jumping to conscious conclusions. As an
added bonus, the client often achieves a special insight into their
subconscious desires, dreams, and life goals.
Note: If at any time you feel uncomfortable or you
are being asked questions that seem unethical, get up and leave right
away. This rule should be applied in all areas of life, especially when
dealing with people of trust (e.g. Doctors, mental health professionals,
lawyers etc.).
Will I remember anything?
A hypnotic trance is more like a daydream that a deep
sleep. If you choose, you can remember anything that you wish, while
discarding anything that is not memorable.
Isn't self-hypnosis safer and more effective?
Hypnosis is always safest with a trained professional
on hand to guide your thoughts and bring you safely out of your trance.
What if I'm too smart to be hypnotized?
Everyone is capable of a daydream. Contrary to
popular belief, hypnosis is not a physical sensation of deep relaxation,
but rather a mental state of intensely focused concentration. Everyone
can be hypnotized but not everyone is capable of sustaining their
concentration for maximum suggestibility.
